OPD Propane Cylinder Valves
All propane cylinders between 4 and 40 lbs. in the state of Texas are required to be fitted with an overfill prevention device (OPD). If a bottle is overfilled with propane, a potentially dangerous situation exists. The OPD requirement prevents cylinders from being overfilled. Mission Gas Company keeps OPD valves in stock and can install them for you if your cylinder requires it.
OPD Cylinder Valve
The picture to the left shows an OPD equipped propane cylinder. The valve is easily distinguished by the triangular shape of the handwheel. This identifies to the cylinder plant personnel that the cylinder is in fact equipped with an OPD and is legal to fill. Mission Gas Company can refit old style cylinder valves with OPD cylinder valves during bottle recertification.
Old Style (Non-OPD) Cylinder Valve
The picture to the left shows an old propane cylinder with a valve that is not equipped with an OPD (overfill prevention device). Propane cylinders that are not equipped with an OPD valve must be re-fitted with an OPD valve if they are to continue in service. This can normally be done while you wait, if cylinder repair technicians are available.
